EMDR Therapy FAQs
What is EMDR therapy?
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured therapy that helps the brain reprocess traumatic memories. It uses bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements, to reduce the emotional distress associated with difficult past experiences.
How does EMDR help with trauma and PTSD?
Trauma can cause memories to become 'stuck' in their original distressing form. EMDR helps the brain's natural healing process to resume, allowing these memories to be integrated as normal past events rather than vivid, upsetting triggers in the present.
What happens in an EMDR session?
During processing phases, you will focus on a specific memory while following a therapist's hand movements, or using auditory tones or tactile pulsers. This bilateral activity leads to a decrease in the vividness and emotional intensity of the memory.
How many EMDR sessions will I need?
The number of sessions varies depending on the complexity of the trauma. Some people find relief from a single event in 6 to 12 sessions, while complex or multiple traumas may require longer-term work tailored to your specific pace.
Is EMDR suitable for me?
EMDR is highly effective for trauma, but it is also used for anxiety, panic, and phobias. During our initial consultation, we will assess your history and current needs to ensure that EMDR is the safest and most appropriate approach for you.
Is EMDR safe?
Yes, EMDR is a safe, non-invasive therapy. A key part of the process is the 'Preparation' phase, where we develop grounding and coping skills to ensure you feel stable and supported throughout the entire therapeutic journey.
Booking Your Journey
How do I book an appointment?
You can book directly on the website or by emailing james@plymouthemdr.co.uk. I aim to respond to all inquiries within 24 hours to schedule an initial consultation and discuss your needs.
Do I need a referral from my GP?
No, you do not need a formal referral. Many clients self-refer for EMDR therapy. However, if you are using private health insurance, your provider may require a GP referral first.
How long are the sessions and how much do they cost?
Standard EMDR sessions are usually 60 to 90 minutes. Fees reflect professional accreditation and specialist expertise; current rates and session lengths will be confirmed during your initial contact.
What is your cancellation policy?
I require at least 48 hours' notice for cancellations. This allows me to offer the time to others who may be waiting for support. Sessions cancelled within 48 hours may be subject to a full fee.
Do you offer online EMDR sessions?
No, we only offer in-person EMDR sessions at this time.
Confidentiality & Privacy
Is what I share in sessions confidential?
Yes. Confidentiality is a cornerstone of EMDR therapy. What you share is held in strict confidence, adhering to the ethical frameworks of both the BACP and EMDR UK to provide a safe space for your healing.
Are there any limits to confidentiality?
Limits apply only if there is a serious risk of harm to yourself or others, or if required by law. These rare instances are always discussed with you beforehand whenever possible, prioritizing your safety and informed consent.
How is my personal information stored?
All records are stored securely in compliance with GDPR and relevant data protection legislation. We use encrypted digital systems to ensure your privacy is maintained throughout your treatment and beyond.
Will you contact my GP or employer?
We will not contact your employer or GP without your explicit written consent, except in emergency situations where there is an immediate risk to life, as outlined in our initial practice framework agreement.
